Battling the Beast of Baldness

It has been six years of fighting hair loss and I am at a loss. After countless attempts with finasteride, minoxidil, microneedling, various oils, and herbal tinctures on my scalp, I wonder to myself if I will ever beat this beast called balding.

Ever since I was young, I loved having hair and expressing myself with a stylish haircut. When I began balding at 20, I was confident that it wasn’t balding, and that maybe I was just using the wrong products. As I showered, more and more clumps fell out of my head. There was no denying it anymore. I was balding, and it wasn’t stopping any time soon.

I tried taking finasteride, using minoxidil, using a derma roller on my scalp twice a week, rosemary oil, etc etc. It was working on the crown, but it wasn’t bringing my full hairline back. I was still rocking a buzzed look but at least my hair wasn’t reminiscent of a freshly waxed car on a summer day. My friend who was in barber school would come over to practice fades on me, and we were using powdered hair to fill in my front gaps. It helped with my confidence, but I still wanted my hair to grow longer than a centimeter.

Then, one day this same friend came over and showed me a TikTok video of men’s hairpieces being installed, and thought I should try one. I was hesitant at first. What? A toupee? Doesn’t that have so much negativity connected with it? What will my friends and family think? Will strangers be able to tell I’m wearing one?

Months later, I’m filing my taxes and I figured I might as well drop the ball and try this out. If I don’t like it, I can always just take it off, right? I watched so many videos and read so many Reddit posts about hair systems that I was confident I would be able to figure this out on my own.

I felt so much more confident than I had in the past six years. This part of me that I loved so much was finally back, and I didn’t have to worry about constantly wearing hats to feel better about my appearance. They said they could not even tell - that’s how good it looks.

People can preach all day to you about “embrace the bald” but here’s the thing. You don’t need to embrace being bald. You can embrace confidence in any way you find it!
