When to consider a gray hair piece

Embracing your natural hair color provides a powerful sense of self-acceptance and personal empowerment. It also means that your existing hair is healthier and not exposed to harsh color chemicals that can lead to weak, dry and brittle strands. As soon as your hair starts to develop gray, you can add a similar percentage to your new hair system.

Our toupee options for men with gray hair start from 5% gray and progress to a full gray hair system. You can decide based on the level of gray you have in your existing hair. If you use a full cap for total hair loss, it’s up to you at which point you would like to start including gray hair to make your hair system look as natural as possible.

How much gray do I need?

There are two ways to identify how much gray is in your hair currently. You can send us a sample of your own hair so we can look at the balance of gray against your natural color. We always recommend sending us a hair sample if you’d like us to match your natural hair color as closely as possible. 

Or you can tell us what percentage of gray you would like in your hair. For example, your hair color is off-black, and you want 70% off-black and 30% gray. This is colour 1B20# on our website. The image below provides a visual of the color names, codes and percentages of gray.

How do I add gray to my hair system?

If you are selecting a stock hairpiece from our website, when you choose the main hair color on our website, you have the option to select the percentage of gray you want, starting at 10% through to a full gray hair piece.

For example, if your natural color is dark brown and you want 70% dark brown and 30% gray, this is Dark Brown with Gray #230 on our website.

If you would like to be more prescriptive about how much gray you have across all areas of your hair then a custom hair system will be perfect for you. Custom orders enable you to specify exactly what volume of gray you need in different areas of your toupee. There are 8 areas of hair so, for example, if you would like more gray at the temples (areas 5 and 6) then you can specify the percentage within your order. There are so many color possibilities using the custom hair system option, and you are in complete control.

In addition, our color rings for custom-made hair systems are a useful way to see the color possibilities, with each ring holding 90 color samples, including ones with gray hair.

What type of gray hair should I choose?

We have two types of gray hair available on our website: human gray hair and synthetic gray hair.

Human gray hair

Human gray hair is softer and smoother to touch. It reflects the light better for a more natural and realistic look, and is long-lasting. Although it’s important to consider that the color is prone to fading, which can be an issue if you spend a lot of time in the sun.

Synthetic gray hair

If the percentage of gray needed is less than 30%, we recommend using synthetic gray hair. Color resistant synthetic gray hair is realistic and ideal if you wish to color the remaining hair in your hair piece without affecting the gray, or you are going to spend lots of time in the sun. It’s important to be careful with friction, though, as this can damage the synthetic hair.

Sending us a hair sample is the best way to ensure that we can match your hair color correctly. The other option is to find your main hair color on our website then select from the gray options, which have percentage increases. For an exact color match, you can also use a Lordhair color ring. 

Will the website help me choose a gray hairpiece?

Yes, our website can help you select your gray hairpiece. You can select your main hair color and choose how much gray to add. If you wish to add a varying amount of gray to your toupee, then you can do this with a custom order. Our experienced Customer Service representatives can help you here too.

I want a full gray wig, can I buy that on the website?

Through our custom option on the Lordhair website, you can select the full cap base size, base material, hair length, cut and color of your hair system - in fact those are just a few of the many options you have. You can select partial amounts of gray or a full gray wig or cap.

How can I get different volumes of gray in my hair system?

Our custom service allows you to select differing percentages of gray for the 8 sections of the head, so if you would like more gray at your temples initially then this is possible, perhaps allowing it to better match your sideburns. When you are ready, you have the option to increase the gray percentage throughout your hair system.
