Getting the color right is one of the most important parts of ordering a hair system. Even a slight shade off can make the whole thing look unnatural. Hair system color ring is a hands-on reference tool that helps you pick the right color that matches your natural hair.
What Is a Hair System Color Ring?
A color ring is a physical sample set of hair strands, each dyed to a specific shade and labeled with a color code. Think of it like a paint swatch card, but it's for hair. When you hold the ring up to your natural hair or reference photo, you can see which code matches your color most closely.
Color rings are especially helpful when you're ordering for the first time, switching shades, or trying to match hair that's changed over the years.
Lordhair Color Rings
Lordhair provides two separate color rings for men:
- Stock Color Ringโ covers all the colors available for men's stock hair systems.
- Custom Color Ringโ covers all the colors available for custom-made hair systems.
Together, the rings cover over 90 colors, including options with varying grey percentages.

Primary Colors
The main color range runs from darkest to lightest: #1 Jet Black, #1B Off Black, #2 Darkest Brown, #3 Dark Brown, #4 Medium Dark Brown, #5 Medium Brown, #6 Medium Light Brown, #7 Light Brown, #17 Dark Blonde, #18 Dark Blonde, and #20 Blonde.
These are neutral tones with no red. On the color ring, each shade also has a matching "T" code (for example, 1T, 4T, 7T). The T stands for the standard processed tone of that color.
Ash Colors
There are two ash shades on the ring: #4ASH and #7ASH. These have no red tone, but instead carry a cool, ashy quality. If your natural hair leans cool or silvery, these may be a better fit than the standard primary colors.
Red Tone Colors
If your natural hair has a warm, reddish tone, Lordhair has you covered. The "R" suffix marks colors with red tone: 4R, 6R, 8R, 10R, 12R, 17R, 20R, 30R. So if you pick 8R, you're getting a #8 base with red tone added.
Grey Hair Colors
For fully grey or salt-and-pepper hair, the ring includes shades 59, 60, and 60RY. These represent different tones within the grey range.
Mixed Grey Percentages
A lot of men have natural hair that's partially grey. For those cases, Lordhair offers blended colors that combine a base shade with a specific grey percentage. The code tells you everything:
- 180T= #1 Jet Black with 80% grey
- 1B20= #1B Off Black with 20% grey
- 395T= #3 Dark Brown with 95% grey
- 1765T= #17 Dark Blonde with 65% grey
The pattern is consistent: the base color number comes first, followed by the grey percentage. Once you get that, reading any blended code is straightforward.
A Note on European Hair
The color rings are calibrated for processed and standard hair types. European hair is unprocessed and has naturally unique tones, so the ring shades may not translate perfectly. If you have European hair, the most reliable approach is to send a hair sample directly to Lordhair or speak with the team before ordering.
Other Ways to Choose Your Hair Color
A physical color ring is one of the most reliable ways to check a match, but there are a couple of other options if you don't have one on hand.
Lordhair AI Try-On
Lordhair's AI try-on tool lets you upload a photo and preview different hair system styles and colors on yourself. It's a useful starting point, especially if you want to see how a shade looks before committing.
Send a Hair Sample
If you want a precise match, you can send a small sample of your natural hair to Lordhair. This is the most accurate method, particularly for anyone with unusual or hard-to-classify tones.

Not Sure Where to Start?
Picking the right hair color comes down to three things: knowing your base shade, understanding whether you need ash, red, or grey mixed in, and having a physical reference in hand.
The Lordhair color ring covers all of that. With over 100 shades, including blended grey percentages, warm red tones, and cool ash options, there's a code for most natural hair colors. You can explore Lordhair color rings and more tools on our website
