If you've ever looked in the mirror and wondered, "Why doesn't my system look like it did on day one?" I've been there too. When I first started wearing hair systems, I loved the transformation. But after a short time, I found that the hair system began to shed and lost its shine and softness. I visited salons to have it fixed, but it was costly, and the results didn't hold for long.
I did a lot of research on my own and finally learned something crucial: great results depend on great maintenance. Without proper care, even the best hair system can lose that new hair feeling and wear out quickly.
In this article, I'm going to share the exact routine I use and how to solve the common issues that every hair system wearer faces.

The 3 Biggest Frustrations Every Hair System Wearer Faces
No matter how high-quality your hair system is, sooner or later, you will encounter the issues that are common to every wearer. With years of experience wearing a hair system, I've noticed the same issues happening to nearly everyone: drying, shedding, and tangling. Based on my own experience, I will introduce why these happen and how a proper hair system maintenance routine can prevent them.
-
Drying
This is one of the most frustrating things for most wearers, and it's completely normal. Unlike your own hair, a hair system doesn't get moisture from the natural oils of the scalp, so all the moisture needs to come from the products you use.
If you wash your system too often, use the wrong kind of shampoo, or expose it to heat and sun without protection, the hair gradually loses moisture. Even hot water or hard water can make it worse. When that happens, the hair will feel rough, lose shine, and become hard to style.
-
Shedding
Seeing extra strands in your brush or sink can be stressful. Shedding often occurs due to adhesive buildup, rough handling, or harsh washing that weakens the hair knots.
Hair is tied to the hair system base by knotting or knotless ventilation methods. Over time, due to brushing, washing, and daily wear, the connection between hair and the base can loosen or break. Rough washing or brushing, and harsh products all can worsen the situation and accelerate shedding.
-
Tangling
Tangling usually happens when hair gets too dry or when there is residue buildup. Because toupee hair doesn't get the natural oils from the scalp, it can dry out easily and become rough. When that happens, the strands start to catch on each other and form knots.
Skipping the conditioner or using too much styling product can worsen tangling. Over time, this can cause the hair to look frizzy or difficult to manage. If tangles are not fixed, they will continue to pull on the base and cause the hair to break off or fall out.
My Easy At-Home Hair System Maintenance Routine
To keep those common problems away, your hair system needs proper daily care. A good maintenance routine not only makes your hair system look better, but also extends its lifespan. A well-cared-for system stays soft, easy to style, and natural-looking for much longer. Skipping hair system care might save a few minutes today, but it will cost you weeks of wear in the long run.
Over the years, I've learned that you don't really need complicated salon treatments to keep your hair system in perfect condition. With the right steps and the right hair system care products, you can easily do it yourself at home.
I call this the 3R routine โ RESET, RENEWAL, and REFRESH. It's the exact process I use myself, and it's the same method that inspired the Lordhair Hair System Maintenance Collection, which we designed to make professional care easy for everyone.

RESET: Clean the Base Gently but Thoroughly
Every great routine starts with a clean base. But regular shampoos can be too harsh for hair systems. They strip away moisture and can even damage the base. That's why RESET is made to be different. It's a gentle cleanser that removes buildup and residue without drying the hair or irritating your scalp.
Remove your hair system slowly and carefully. Spray adhesive remover onto a cotton pad and gently rub in circular motions as you remove the hairpiece from your scalp. Be patient and avoid pulling it too hard, or you may damage the base or pull it out of shape.
Next, wash the hair system with RESET in lukewarm water. Massage it gently around the adhesive areas to remove any residue and buildup. Repeat this two or three times until the base is completely clean, and then rinse it thoroughly in clean water.
Each base type needs special considerations during this step:
-
Thin Skin Base: Never twist or bend the base as it stretches easily. Be gentle when massaging the cleanser with your fingertips.
-
Full Lace Base: Lace is delicate, so never wring or scrub it. Use gentle circular motions, and always support the lace with your palm while cleaning.
-
Hybrid Base: Since it combines two types of materials, treat each area according to its material. Pay special attention to the edges, where adhesives are easy to build up.
Taking your time here makes the biggest difference. A clean base will result in better adhesion, comfort, and longevity.
RENEWAL: Deep Conditioning
Once your base is clean, it's time to take care of the hair. Hair systems don't get natural oils like your own hair does, so they need that extra boost of moisture. RENEWAL is designed for deep conditioning of the hair system.
First, gently detangle the hair with a wide-tooth comb, brushing away from the base of the hair system to avoid loosening knots. Then apply the RENEWAL mask evenly through the hair. Leave it for about five minutes to let it soak in, then rinse with lukewarm water.
This step helps bring back softness and shine, smooths out tangles, and keeps the hair feeling like new again. If your system's been feeling dry or rough lately, this step will bring it back to life.
REFRESH: Lock In Moisture and Protect
Last but not least, it's all about keeping that moisture locked in. REFRESH is your go-to for this, a lightweight leave-in spray that hydrates, protects, and keeps your hair system looking its best all day.
After washing, gently place your hair system on a towel, fold the towel over, and press gently to remove extra water. Avoid twisting or wringing it, or it can damage the base or cause shedding. Let your system air dry. Once your hair system is about 80% dry, it's time for the final touch.
Apply REFRESH to lock in moisture and protect from heat, sun and dryness. This step keeps the hair soft, smooth, and easy to style like natural hair.
Each morning, I like to give my system a quick spritz before styling. It keeps the hair soft, smooth, and tangle-free between washes. Itโs quick, it smells clean, and it makes styling so much easier.

How often should I wash my hair system?
That depends on your lifestyle. For most wearers, it is recommended to remove and clean your hair system every 2 weeks. If you work out a lot or live in a humid region, you might need to clean your system more frequently. But keep in mind, washing too often can make the hair dry and wear out your system faster. Gentle cleaning is more important than how often you wash.
Can I use regular shampoo and conditioner?
I don't recommend using regular shampoos and conditioners. These products are designed for natural hair, which naturally produces oils. Hair systems don't have that, so normal products can dry out the hair or damage the base. It is recommended to use products made for hair systems, which are gentler and help keep the hair soft and healthy.
How do I keep my hair system from drying out?
Hair systems can get dry because they don't get natural oils from your scalp. To fix that, use a deep treatment mask or moisture spray regularly. After every wash, condition the hair well and use a light leave-in spray every day to keep it smooth and hydrated.
What's the best way to prevent shedding?
Most shedding happens because of rough brushing or strong products. Always detangle gently, starting from the ends and working up. Never brush when the hair is soaking wet. Avoid alcohol-based sprays, as they can weaken the hair and knots.
Why does my hair system tangle so easily?
Tangles usually happen when the hair gets too dry or has too much product buildup. Since hair systems don't make natural oils, they need extra moisture to stay smooth. Skipping the conditioner or using harsh shampoo can make tangles worse.
